Brake fluid is perhaps the most vital fluid found in any car as ultimately its prime job is to efficiently aid operation of the braking system.
When a driver presses the brake pedal, brake fluid is compressed which in turn pushes the caliper brake pads against the brake discs of your car ensuring the vehicle stops in adequate time. Under heavy or persistent braking temperatures can rise dramatically and effect how efficient your brake fluid performs. Too higher temperatures can mean that the fluid begins to boil, turning to a vapour which will create a "sponginess feeling" on the brake pedal and reduce the amount of force being placed on the brake discs via the brake calipers.
A further problem can arise when the brake fluid is not changed regularly. A brake fluid has hygroscopic properties - meaning that it absorbs moisture during its life in your car through the pipes, hoses and joints that it lubricates. As the water content in the brake fluid increases, the temperature the liquid boils at decreases from when the brake fluid is ‘dry’ (ie no water content when new) to when it is ‘wet’ (contaminated with water).
